Jefferson sophomore Tyler Butina has been selected as the 2021 Wisconsin Baseball Central Newcomer of the Year.

The infielder was a major factor in the Eagles earning a silver trophy as the Division 2 state runner-up this year. The sophomore sensation batted .462 with an eye-popping 27 extra-base hits, which ranks him among the state leaders. He knocked 20 doubles, two triples and five home runs and drove in 43 runs.

The Newcomer of the Year award was first introduced in 2017. It goes to the freshman or sophomore who made the biggest impact in his first season of significant varsity playing time.

Butina joins Aquinas' Jess Ondell (2017), West De Pere's Cameron Dupont (2018) and Eau Claire North's Gabriel Richardson (2019) as winners of the honor.

The other finalists for this year's award were St. Thomas More's Alex Alicea, Kenosha St. Joseph's Brady Davidson, Hudson's Sam Erickson, Deerfield's Cal Fisher, Altoona's Evan Gustafson, Franklin's Boston Halloran, Sun Prairie's Jackson Hunley, Regis' Cole Selvig and Menomonee Falls' Zach Wolfram.
